9 communities. Every month. On deadline.
Ongoing editorial design across nine community print magazines serving neighborhoods across the United States — balancing advertiser constraints, editorial storytelling, and production consistency at scale.
THE WORK
Each magazine serves a distinct local community — different neighborhoods, different advertisers, different editorial content, different page counts. The constraint that never changes is the deadline. Nine publications, every month, each one print-ready and consistent in quality regardless of what the content throws at you.
Advertiser space is non-negotiable — it funds the publication. Editorial content has to work around it, not fight it. That means every layout decision starts with what's fixed and works outward, fitting community stories, photography, and feature content into whatever space remains without letting the seams show.
Case study — Neighbors of North Naperville
The two-year anniversary issue of Neighbors of North Naperville required fitting 24 past covers — two years of publication history — onto a single cover and a two-page inside feature, alongside a substantial amount of editorial text.
24 covers. 2 pages. One shot to make two years feel like a celebration instead of a catalog.
The solution organized the covers into a structured grid system on the anniversary cover itself, creating visual impact from sheer volume without losing legibility. The interior spread balanced the archive imagery with long-form text through careful hierarchy and spacing — giving readers an entry point at every level, from quick scan to full read.
The result was a milestone issue that honored the publication's history without sacrificing the editorial standards readers expect every month.
WHAT THIS DEMONSTRATES
High-volume editorial production isn't just a design skill — it's a professional discipline. Maintaining visual quality, editorial consistency, and production accuracy across nine distinct publications every month requires systems thinking, adaptability, and the ability to solve layout problems fast under real constraints.
